Therapy for Birth Trauma in Ontario

What is Birth Trauma?

Birth trauma occurs when labour or delivery is experienced as physically or emotionally overwhelming. It isn't defined by what happened medically, but by how your nervous system experienced the event.

Birth trauma can happen after any type of birth. It may result from a medical emergency, or from feeling frightened, powerless, unsupported, or unheard during labour and delivery. A birth can be traumatic even if everyone tells you that your baby is healthy or that "everything turned out fine."

Birth trauma isn't limited to the person giving birth. Partners can also experience trauma after witnessing a frightening birth, fearing for the life of their loved one or baby, or feeling helpless during a medical emergency.

Whether your trauma stems from one overwhelming event or many moments that left you feeling unsafe or out of control, your experience is valid, and healing is possible.

Signs and Symptoms of Birth Trauma

Many parents expect the emotional impact of birth trauma to fade with time. Instead, they continue to experience symptoms weeks, months, or even years later.

You may notice:

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks of your birth
  • Nightmares about labour or delivery
  • Feeling panicked when thinking about the birth
  • Avoiding reminders of your birth or medical settings
  • Feeling constantly on edge or easily startled
  • Guilt, shame, or believing you "failed"
  • Anger about how you were treated
  • Fear of becoming pregnant or giving birth again
  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected from your baby or partner
  • Difficulty sleeping because your mind keeps replaying what happened

These are common responses to trauma—not signs of weakness. With the right support, healing is possible.

Can Birth Trauma Cause PTSD?

Signs and Symptoms of Birth Trauma

Signs and Symptoms of Birth Trauma

For some parents, birth trauma develops into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Research suggests that approximately 3–6% of people experience PTSD after childbirth.

PTSD after birth may include:

  • Re-experiencing the traumatic event
  • Avoiding reminders of the birth
  • Feeling constantly on edge or hypervigilant
  • Negative changes in mood, emotions, or beliefs about yourself

Not everyone who experiences birth trauma develops PTSD. Many parents experience anxiety, panic, grief, or emotional distress after a traumatic birth without meeting the full criteria for PTSD. Regardless of the diagnosis, birth trauma deserves compassionate support and effective treatment.

Birth trauma can also occur alongside postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, or difficulties adjusting to parenthood.

The good news is that these symptoms are treatable.

How EMDR Therapy Treats Birth Trauma

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most well-researched treatments for trauma and PTSD. It is widely recognized as an effective, evidence-based treatment for birth trauma and other traumatic experiences.

Rather than asking you to repeatedly relive your birth experience, EMDR Therapy helps your brain process memories that have become "stuck."

Traumatic memories often remain stored with the same fear, helplessness, or panic you felt in the moment. Through EMDR Therapy, these memories can become integrated into your broader life story so they no longer feel like they are happening all over again.

As therapy progresses, many clients notice:

  • Less emotional intensity when thinking about their birth
  • Fewer flashbacks and intrusive memories
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Greater feelings of safety
  • Less guilt or self-blame
  • Increased confidence in themselves as parents
  • More enjoyment of life with their baby
  • Greater hope for the future
