Perinatal generally describes the time from pregnancy through the first year after birth. Perinatal depression is a common and treatable mental health condition that can occur during pregnancy or in the months following birth. It is more than the temporary “baby blues” and involves persistent feelings of sadness, low mood, exhaustion, or emotional overwhelm that interfere with daily functioning. Perinatal depression can affect sleep, energy levels, concentration, self-esteem, and the ability to feel like yourself.
Perinatal depression can be influenced by hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, previous mental health concerns, difficult birth experiences, fertility challenges, limited support, or the significant identity shift that often accompanies becoming a parent.
