What Does "Perinatal" Mean?

Perinatal generally describes the time from pregnancy through the first year after birth. Many professionals also include the time spent trying to conceive and extend the postpartum period to up to two years, recognizing that emotional and physical changes often start on the fertility joucontinue beyond the first year.

What is Perinatal Depression?

Perinatal depression is a common and treatable mental health condition that can occur during pregnancy or in the months following birth. It is more than the temporary “baby blues” and involves persistent feelings of sadness, low mood, exhaustion, or emotional overwhelm that interfere with daily functioning. Perinatal depression can affect sleep, energy levels, concentration, self-esteem, and the ability to feel like yourself.


Perinatal depression can be influenced by hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, previous mental health concerns, difficult birth experiences, fertility challenges, limited support, or the significant identity shift that often accompanies becoming a parent.

Symptoms of Perinatal Depression

Perinatal depression can affect emotional wellbeing, physical health, thoughts, and daily functioning. Symptoms may begin during pregnancy or anytime postpartum as individuals adjust to parenthood.

Common symptoms of perinatal depression include:

  • Persistent sadness or low mood 
  • Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope 
  • Frequent crying or emotional sensitivity 
  • Loss of interest or enjoyment in activities 
  • Fatigue or low energy 
  • Difficulty sleeping, even when tired 
  • Changes in appetite 
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or inadequacy 
  • Increased irritability or frustration 
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions 
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others 
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby 
  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts 
  • Feeling numb or unlike yourself 
  • Withdrawing from social connection or support
